Estimates vary based on where the cotton is grown and how it's produced, but the widely accepted global average is that it takes about 2,700 litres of water to produce a conventional cotton t-shirt*. Growing cotton takes about 60% to 70% of the water used. Once harvested, the cotton must be bleached, spun and dyed - processes which are also incredibly water-intensive.
